USEFUL INFORMATION FOR NEW AND SEASONED BEEKEEPERS

VIRGINIA HONEY LABELING RULES:

https://www.virginiabeekeepers.org/Honey-and-Labeling

MAKE YOUR OWN BEEHIVES:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lT8P5OUs8BQ

If you are an experienced woodworker, here is a video showing how you can build your own Langstroth hives.

MAKE YOUR OWN HONEY STICKS:

https://www.instructables.com/Homemade-Honey-Sticks/

Honey sticks sell like hotcakes from the HCBA fair booth every time they have been offered.

CLEANUP HINT

If either wax or propolis gets imbedded into the lint screen of your clothes dryer, grain alcohol (minimum 75% alcohol by volume) will clean the screen.

ALTERNATIVE HIVE MATERIAL

Insulated plastic beehives are an interesting, but more expensive, alternative to painted wood hives.  Above is an example of the Apimaye hive.

BEEHIVE PROTECTION:

Nite Guard solar predator lights.
https://www.niteguard.com/

Testament:  My wife and I have had about 15 of these red blinking solar lights set up on triangular sticks (3 lights on each stick so that they shine in all directions) on both ends of each line of our hives for seven years and our hives have never been damaged by a bear or other scavenger.  I can't guarantee that they will work for you, but this is a relatively inexpensive deterrent. - Brian Carrozza - Website Administrator - 02/09/2021
